 Established in 1680, the city is located on a peninsula of land between the Ashley and the Cooper Rivers. Today just over 36,000 people are estimated to be living on the Peninsula of Charleston. There is a diverse selection of homes for the downtown buyer, varying in age, size, and price from historic single family homes to new and renovated condos. The preservation of the architectural heritage of the city of Charleston can largely be credited to the Preservation Society, founded in 1920. Along with the beautiful historic buildings of the downtown area there are also beautiful city parks, famous restaurants and unique shopping experiences.
