Admission and activities are free!

During April, the Mount Pleasant Historical Commission has been highlighting the wonderful bounty we enjoy from the ocean, bays, and creeks of the Low Country.  Historically, our waterways have been major cultural and economic drivers contributing to life as we know it in Mount Pleasant.  Now that our boat ramps have reopened, let's learn about the fishing industry in Mount Pleasant!

The development of the commercial fishing industry paralleled that of the shrimping industry that we highlighted last week.  By the 1950's, Shem Creek offered the proper ingredients for the successful growth of commercial fishing:  access, boat-building, dockage, fuel, and ice.  Mount Pleasant Seafood Company and Simmons Seafood are two of the multigenerational commercial companies that developed during this era.

Due to our proximity to the estuaries, creeks, and the open ocean, the area is an incubator for a wide variety of fish such as wahoo, mahi, tuna, king mackerel, grouper, flounder, snapper, amberjack, sea bass, shark and a variety of other fish attracting commercial and recreational charter captains along with recreational anglers.  Not only do many of our commercial fisherman supply our local restaurants, but they sell their catch off the dock and some, like Abundant Seafood, even offer Community Supported Fishery (CSF) as a subscription service. So remember, stay calm and buy local!

As we finish our 6th week at home, don't forget to take the Mount Pleasant History at Home Art Work Challenge #MtPGiftsfromtheSea. We invite the children of the community to help us promote our past and cultivate an interest in our history through their eyes with this simple challenge.

Here's how it works:

  • Post a picture of your creation or picture to Instagram.
