North Charleston is the third largest city in the state of South Carolina. It has approximately 27 neighborhoods and extends into three counties, Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester. The city is located near the Atlantic Ocean on the coastal plain of North of the city of Charleston. It is a principal city in the Charleston-North Charleston urbanized area and the city leads the state in top gross retail sales. Before the Civil War, the area was dotted with plantations, many or which raised crops of rice and indigo. Among the many plantations were Archdale Hall Plantation built in 1680. Elms Plantation built in 1682, Windsor Hill Plantation built in 1701 and more. By the end of the 1800s, the large plantations were divided into many smaller farms. The area developed very slowly and remained mostly rural, housing phosphate fertilizer plants and strip mines for much of its history. It was not until 1972 that the slow growing community was officially incorporated.
